Thinking of Applying - Receiving and Accepting an Offer of Placement

Printer-Friendly Version

Notification of Assistantship

If selected for an assistantship, candidates are notified by email through the agency through which they applied in their home country. The notification will include:

  • Terms and Conditions of Award which outline the assistantship offer and provide all the information needed to research the school at which the FLTA will be placed. This will provide the candidate with the information necessary to make a decision as to whether or not to accept the placement
  • Other forms to be sent to IIE, including those to indicate acceptance or rejection of offer.

Accepting or Declining an Offer of Assistantship

Candidates are:

  • Given only ONE offer of placement. Before deciding candidates:
    • Must be certain that they can begin their awards on the start date listed in the Terms. If they cannot, they must decline, as there are no late starts permitted
    • Must be sure they can complete the entire program - a full academic year - as outlined in the Terms.
  • Given TWO WEEKS from the date the notification is sent to make their decision
    • If declined, there will be no other offers
    • If accepted, FLTAs must:

Fax to IIE/ New York:

      • one signed copy of Terms of Award
      • a copy of their passport with an expiration date at least 6 months past the end date of the FLTA program
      • a BIODATA information page (included with the Terms of Award)
      • the signed Accept/Reject Form.

Mail/ Bring to the agency through which they applied:

      • Two original, signed copies of the Terms of Award
      • Completed Medical History form, if not submitted with their original application.

When all indicated documents have been submitted to IIE, the candidate is officially an FLTA at the institution designated in the Terms and Conditions and must begin direct communication with the supervisor designated in the Terms.

Possible Loss of an Assistantship

An assistantship can be rescinded/withdrawn if:

  • an FLTA fails to respond to the host institution or the FLTA program administrators in a timely manner
  • the FLTA is unable to arrive at their host institution on the date specified in their Terms of Award
  • the FLTA indicates their purpose in accepting the FLTA is not in keeping with the FLTA program goals, policies or procedures.
