Thinking of Applying - Interview and Selection

Printer-Friendly Version

Nomination & Selection of FLTA Candidates:

Once candidates have completed their application at https://apply.embark.com/student/fulbright/flta/25/, the following will occur:

  1. Commission and Embassy staff review on-line applications to ensure that candidates meet the basic qualifications for program participation (age, academic background, English language fluency, etc.) Applications are further evaluated based on personal characteristics as manifested in letters of recommendation, essays and activities.
  2. Those candidates who pass the first review by Fulbright Commission and Embassy staff are invited for a personal interview. The interview will provide the selection committee an overall evaluation of the candidate and an opportunity for the FLTA to obtain more information about the program. Candidates will be expected to present supporting documentation (transcripts, test scores, health records, etc.) Normally, the interview will serve to confirm what is already clear from the application. However, if negative information becomes available in the interview, the candidacy will be rejected.
  3. Once a candidate has been approved and nominated by the Fulbright Commission or U.S. Embassy staff in their home country, their on-line application is made available for further review. IIE first reviews on-line applications and supporting materials for completeness. Incomplete files are rejected.  Complete applications are then sent  to the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs where they are reviewed by the presidentially-appointed J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board in the United States.
  4.  A more thorough reading and analysis is then conducted by IIE.  When necessary, candidate responses to questions that are unclear or information that may need to be verified is sent back to the Fulbright Commission or U.S. Embassy for comment and clarification. Candidate dossiers are then preliminarily matched with potential host institutions based on a variety of characteristics and special requests submitted to IIE by participating colleges and universities.

  5. Colleges and universities receive a panel of 4-5 candidates that IIE determines match the profile they have requested. Candidates are frequently submitted to more than one host institution, in order to provide them with a multiplicity of opportunities for placement. Participating colleges and universities perform the final review of the candidates and determine who they believe would be the most successful FLTA for their campus. They rank the submitted candidates from the panel they have received in order of their preference. Those candidates not ranked by a college or university will not receive an assistantship. The host institution submits their ranking to IIE. IIE subsequently notifies the Fulbright Commission or U.S. Embassy of a candidate’s final selection for the program.
