Eligibility Criteria:Applicants must: - be no younger than 21 and no older than 29 at the time of application
- reside in the country of nomination at the time of application
- possess the equivalent of a U.S. Bachelor's degree with a good academic record, Master's degrees are highly desirable at many institutions
- be teachers of English or training to become teachers of English (if applying in a less commonly taught language); prior teaching experience is preferred
- be fluent in English, as demonstrated by a score of no less than 550 (Paper Based TOEFL); 213 (Computer Based TOEFL - CBT); 79-80 (Internet Based TOEFL - IBT)or 6.0 (Overall Score International English Language Testing System - IELTS)
- clearly demonstrate maturity, dependability, integrity and professionalism
- be outgoing and dynamic individuals with a great sense of humor.
All FLTAs are required to secure visas in time for host institution reporting dates. Failure to do so may result in the loss of the assistantship. Candidates with U.S. citizenship or dual citizenship with the U.S. and another country cannot be included in this program. The TOEFL or IELTS ExamsAll candidates must submit scores for the TOEFL or IELTS. Each candidate is responsible for ensuring that his or her scores are forwarded to IIE. The IIE code (2326) must be entered on the answer sheet on the day of the test.

TOEFL or IELTS scores received after February can be submitted with a candidate's application to the program. All candidates for the 20010-2011 competition without scores are required to register for tests scheduled between September 2009 and January 2010.
