Becoming a Host Site - Funding/Languages/Countries

FUNDING

FLTAs are funded at different levels depending on the country of citizenship and the languages taught.

Fulbright Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTLs) 

LANGUAGES: Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Dari, Gujarati, Hausa, Hindi/Urdu, Indonesian, Japanese, Kazakh, Kiswahili, Korean, Kyrgyz, Malay, Mongolian, Pashtu, Persian, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Tagalog, Tajik, Thai, Turkish, Uzbek, Wolof and Yoruba.

COUNTRIES/PROVINCES: Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Mongolia, Morocco, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Palestinian Territories, Philippines, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, South Korea, Syria, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan and Yemen.

Fulbright Traditional Languages

LANGUAGES: Finnish, French, Irish (Gaelic), German, Italian, and Spanish.

COUNTRIES/PROVINCES: Argentina, Austria, Belgium,  Canada, Colombia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain and Uruguay.

Fulbright Funding 

The U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs provides all FLTAs with the ASPE Health benefit plan and Fulbright enrichment activities, as well as LCTL FLTAs with:

• Funds for room, board and daily living expenses
• Round-trip international travel

Fulbright Commissions arrange round-trip international travel for traditional language FLTAs.

Host Institution Cost-Share Requirements: 

For all language requests, host institutions must offer a tuition and fees waiver for the required two courses per semester.

Applying to host an FLTA is a competitive process.  Additional consideration will be given to institutions offering maximum cost-share for a LCTL request.

For all traditional language requests, host institutions must offer: 

For French, German, Italian, Spanish

• A financial award great enough to cover room, board and daily living expenses 

              OR

• Free room and board and a monthly stipend between $400-$600
